Donald Lee Butler, 82, of Morgan City, Alabama passed away on April 23, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of quiet devotion, steady dependability and a life lived fully in service to others.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia Butler, daughter , Teresa Whalen, son, Donnie Butler (Tina), grandchildren Ashley Phillips, Caroline Meherg (Nate), Eli Butler (Tory), great grandchildren: Hayden Phillips, Scarlett Meherg, Abel Whalen, Isaiah Whalen and Nateline Cook and his brother and buddy, Frank Arnold Butler (Gail). He has a host of family, dear friends and brothers in the Lord whom he loved and who loved him dearly.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Charlie Walter Butler and Artie Marie Willis Butler, his brothers Charles Butler and Robert Butler and his grandson Jonathan Lee Whalen. We can only imagine the reunion that took place when he busted through the gates of heaven!
Donald served in the US Army and ended his 21-year career retiring as a MSgt. Although he was very proud of serving his country and received many honors during his time as a soldier, his greatest pride was his family. His years in the military allowed him and his family to travel the world visiting castles, cathedrals, parks and historical venues throughout most of Europe. They also traveled the US extensively and enjoyed sites from sea to shining sea.
During his time in the Army, he served as Scout Master and assisted many Scouts in achieving Eagle Scout. He was named Volunteer of the Year on Redstone Arsenal for his support of the Boy Scouts. After retirement from the military, he was a clerk for the US Postal Service for 20 years.
He was an active member of Brindlee Mountain Baptist Church for over 26 years. You would frequently find him at the front door, greeting others with a warm smile and a handshake. He served at Sharehouse, providing assistance to those in the community in need. He participated with a group of men who visited neighboring states after catastrophes to assist with clean up. On Tuesday morning you would find him participating in the men’s prayer group—one of his favorite times.
Visitation will be held on April 29, 2026, from noon until 1:00pm at Brindlee Mountain Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow. The full Military Honors service will be led by Mylon Metcalf and Robby Boyd. A private family burial at Huntsville Memory Gardens will take place at a later date.
Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel are assisting the family. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Brindlee Mountain Baptist Church or Sharehouse.
