Dr. Diane Eve Wall, a respected scholar, devoted educator, and compassionate community advocate, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 4 at the age of 80 in Starkville, MS.
Born on November 17, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, Diane was the daughter of Albert George and Jean Carol Bradley. A lifelong learner and academic, Diane earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and Education (1966), a Master’s in History (1969), a second Master’s in Political Science (1979), and a Ph.D. in Political Science (1983)—all from Michigan State University.
Diane began her teaching career in Michigan’s public schools before moving into higher education, where she made a lasting impact. Her academic journey included positions at Tidewater Community College, Wayne State University, Lansing Community College, Central Michigan University, and ultimately, Mississippi State University (MSU), where she served from 1983 until her retirement in 2007. At MSU, Diane was a dedicated professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and a valued member of the Shackouls Honors College faculty.
Her contributions went far beyond the classroom. Diane served as Undergraduate Coordinator, Pre-Law Advisor, and Chair of Pre-Law Advising. She was a gubernatorial appointee to the Mississippi Task Force on Local Government Information Systems and held numerous leadership roles in professional and academic organizations, including the American Society for Public Administration, League of Women Voters, and Mississippi Political Science Association.
Diane’s excellence in teaching and advising was recognized with numerous honors, including the MSU Outstanding Woman Teaching Faculty Award (1994), the National Academic Advising Association Outstanding Advisor Award (1995), the MSU Alumni Faculty Recognition Award (2000), and the Jefcoat Excellence in Advising Award (2007). Her scholarly work, particularly on gender and judicial decision-making, contributed significantly to the field of public law.
Beyond her academic life, Diane had a passion for animals and classic cars. A longtime member of the Golden Triangle Kennel Club of Mississippi and former president of the Oktibbeha County Humane Society, she found joy in dog obedience training, especially with her beloved German Shepherds. Diane was a dedicated member of the OCHS Board of Directors until her death, serving the Society for over 25 years.
Diane will be remembered for her intellectual rigor, unflagging commitment to her students, and deep compassion for animals and community causes. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched—as a mentor, colleague, teacher, and friend.
She is survived by her sisters, Penny Bradley, Sheree Gatternig (Gary), Jeanne Planet (Ken), nieces and nephews Kristy Eve Gatternig, Ken Planet, Jean Dobson (Ken), Sheree Planet, and great-nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends on Thursday, June 12 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at Diane’s home, 107 Windover Lane, Starkville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oktibbeha County Humane Society in Starkville, Mississippi in her honor.
