Dazie Wilson Akers, 99, of Fort Payne, Alabama, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2022. She was born September 3, 1923 in Jonestown, Mississippi. She and her twin sister, Mazie served as Rosie-the-Riveters at Columbus Air Force Base during World War II. She and Mazie were also members of the Red Hat Club for a few years. In recent years, since they weren’t able to attend church, their New Oregon church family comes to their home every Monday for coffee.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at New Oregon United Methodist Church with Rev. Ian Conerly officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 12 noon until the 1 p.m. hour of service at the church. Graveside services will follow on Sunday, December 18 at 2 p.m. at Crittenden Memorial Park in Marion, Arkansas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to New Oregon United Methodist Church , 1204 New Oregon Drive, Fort Payne, AL 35967.
She is survived by her daughter Barbara Stewart; twin sister Mazie Long; grandchildren Lori Blackburn, Angie Brewer, Sara Brean, Melanie Winston and Mary Fant Gean; and great-grandsons Jesse Lee Blackburn and Jimmy Golden.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Oliver “Jim” Akers; son James Oliver Akers, Jr.; parents, Wyatt Buford and Mazie Pearl Cantrell Wilson; and 10 siblings.
Wilson Funeral Home and Crematory of Fort Payne is in charge of arrangements.
