Cynthia Joan Sandlin Schuessler, age 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 23, 2023.

Cindy was born on February 19, 1951 to James H. “Buddy” Sandlin and Sarah Nell Sandlin. She was raised in Florence, AL and was married to John Schuessler for 52 years, after a 14-year courtship that began when they were six years old at Harlan School. Cindy was a 1969 graduate of Bradshaw High School, where she was a cheerleader and an honor student. She received a degree in History from UNA and was awarded the Keller Key, given to the top academic achiever of the class. She graduated from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law in 1978 and was a practicing attorney in Florence for 44 years, focusing on family law. She was well respected by her colleagues and was a generous mentor to her staff and to new attorneys.

Cindy also served as the Municipal Judge in Rogersville for several years. Her life was changed in 1984 when she attended a Walk To Emmaus. She was active in her church by teaching a women’s Sunday school class and led several women’s retreats. She also served on the Alabama Emmaus Board. Her most cherished times were the adventures she had with her family and grandchildren in New York, Vancouver, the Smoky Mountains, fly fishing and boat riding at the lake, or visiting the Gulf Coast. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; her sister, Kathy White, and her brother, Clay Sandlin. She is survived by her husband John and their son Chris (Vika); brother, Jimmy Sandlin; grandchildren, Oliver and Mila; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Pallbearers for the funeral will be Joshua White, Jay Sandlin, Trent Cahoon, Brant Rutledge, Donnie Armstrong and Roy Rudolph. The family would like to extend a debt of gratitude to the Critical Care staff at NAMC and to Amedisys Hospice, especially Lana, Shona, Paige and Anna.

A celebration of Cindy’s life will be held at Greenview Funeral Home on Thursday, July 27th at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sammy Gilbreath will officiate. Graveside service will follow the funeral at Greenview Memorial Park.
