Cressie Thornton Garvin, Jr., a lifelong resident of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026.

Born on December 13, 1932, in Huntsville, Alabama, Thornton (known as CT to so many) was the proud son of North Alabama and a devoted member of the community he loved throughout his life. He graduated from Huntsville High School in 1951 and continued his education at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), graduating in 1955. After college, he returned home to Huntsville to work alongside his family and eventually take over the family business, C.T. Garvin Feed and Seed, where he became a familiar and beloved figure to generations of customers and friends.

CT was known for his kindness, generosity, steady wisdom, and genuine compassion for others. His dedication to serving his community extended beyond his business through his involvement with Huntsville Cattleman’s Association and the Huntsville Lions Club. He built lasting friendships throughout the years and touched countless lives with his willingness to help anyone in need.

He was proceeded in death by his father, Cressie Thornton Garvin Sr., his mother, Roselle Wall Garvin; and his sisters, Doris Ward and Mary Willie Gilliam.

CT is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Shirley Garvin, his son, Cress Garvin (Amy); his daughter, Kelli Garvin; his grandchildren, William Edwards (Brooke), Harley Edwards (Ashley), Thornton Garvin (Colee), Jack Garvin, and Faith Adams; as well as four great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him tremendous joy and pride.

Above all else, CT cherished his family, his friends, and his hometown. His legacy of hard work, integrity, generosity, and love will continue to live on in all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in his memory.
