ATHENS – Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks and Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly have officially signed a proclamation designating Tuesday, Sept. 23, as Meningitis Awareness Day in both the city and county.
This day serves as a poignant, annual tribute to Jessica Elkins, a freshman cheerleader at Athens High School, who passed away from bacterial meningitis in December 2007 at the age of 15. On September 23, Jessica would have been 33rd birthday.
Since her passing, the Elkins family has worked to raise awareness about meningitis, ensuring Jessica’s memory lives on
through their continued advocacy. Her family’s dedication to educating others about the serious disease after everything that they have lost has been a shining example of hope and resilience.
Mayor Marks and Chairman Daly were joined by the Elkins family for the signing of the proclamation. The annual signing of the proclamation not only serves as a solemn reminder of the impact of meningitis, but as a call to action for all residents to learn about the disease, recognize its symptoms and ensure they are up-to-date on vaccinations.
The City of Athens and Limestone County are proud to stand united with the Elkins family in their mission to prevent future tragedies and protect the health of the community.
