Carolyn Anne Weltecke Winford, 87, of Tuscumbia, lost her long battle against Parkinson’s disease on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at 4:10 a.m. while at home.

Carolyn was born in Sharon, Weakly County Tenn. on June 22, 1925, to Roscoe Henry and Hazel Banks Weltecke. She spent her youth and adolescence in Sikeston, Mo. and was graduated from Sikeston High school in 1943. She attended and was graduated from William Woods College, Fulton, Mo., in 1945, whereupon she matriculated at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo., where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta social sorority. She was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from that institution in 1947, and taught second grade in Shreveport, La. for a short time prior to her marriage in Columbia to Frontis S. (Sherry) Winford on Feb. 7,1948.

She and Sherry lived in Memphis, Tenn., Harlingen, Texas, Sheffield, Ala. and Dayton, Ohio before settling in Tuscumbia in the summer of 1954. They have lived in their house on Catalpa Street since that time, almost 59 years, where they raised their four children. She was known as “Honey” to her children and to most of their neighborhood friends. Carolyn was active in many charitable and social organizations especially the Brownie and Girl Scouts and for many years took an active part in the life of the First Presbyterian Church in Tuscumbia. Carolyn and Sherry traveled extensively throughout the United States and the world visiting 47 states and more than 110 countries over a period of 20 years.

Preceding Carolyn in death were her parents; her loving stepfather, Kent K. Knight; and her first son and second born, Kent K. Winford, age 50, on March 10, 2003.

She is survived by her husband of 65 plus years; and by her daughter, Martha Winford Cook and husband, Danny, of Killen, Ala.; by her son, Peter C. Winford and wife, Jo, of Harpersville, Ala.; and by her daughter, Robin Winford Daughtry and husband, Hugh, of Charlotte, N.C. She is also survived by her two granddaughters, Kathleen J. Winford and Cameron R. Daughtry; and by her four grandsons, Daniel R. MacMullin, Thomas W. MacMullin, Wesley J. Winford and Zachary K. Daughtry.

The family is grateful to the excellent caregivers who attended Carolyn during her long illness and to Hospice of North Alabama who provided loving and caring attention to her needs.

Carolyn chose cremation; the family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. Friends are invited to visit the family at home. The family requests no flowers and any memorials should be made to Covenant Christian School, 1900 Covenant Drive, Muscle Shoals, AL 35661, or to a memorial of your choice.

Morrison Funeral Home of Tuscumbia is assisting family.
