Carl Douglas Sherer – Obituary

Carl Douglas Sherer, of Muscle Shoals, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the age of 69. His visitation Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Sheffield. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. with Ron Ethridge officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.

Carl was a veteran in the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. He retired from TVA as a Federal Investigator for the TVA police. Before his career at TVA, Carl worked as a photographer for the Times Daily and also served on the Sheffield City Council. Over the last 15 years, he went on over a dozen FEMA assignments around the country to aid in disaster relief efforts and help those in need. He was a Sheffield High School graduate, and until the end of his life, the members of the Class of ’67 held a special place in his heart. He received two bachelor’s degrees from UNA and called the Shoals area home for most of his life. Over the years, he coached hundreds of kids in little league baseball, pee wee football, and basketball, including his two sons. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a loving husband for over 40 years, a wonderful and attentive father, and a true friend to many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lois Sherer; sister-in-law, Frankie Sue Sherer; and brother-in-law, Wayland Darby.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Anne Sherer; sons, Wesley Douglas Sherer of Montgomery and Matthew Dalton Sherer of South Bend, Indiana; brothers, Tommy Sherer (Nell), Jimmy Sherer and Hugh Sherer (Dianne); sister, Shirley Carole Darby; and his beloved dog “Bear.”

Pallbearers will be Donnie Rhodes, Dennis O’Rear, Jack Darby, Tony Carter, Art Schettini, Rusty Robbins, Andy Sharp and Glen Jordan. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Wright, Mike Whitehead, Dr. Allen Long, Rusty Cone and Mark Sherer.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society and/or Wounded Warrior Project.
