Bruce Gargis, age 89, of Sheffield, died Saturday, May 17, 2014. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, May 20, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m., in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Barrett Long officiating. Interment will be in Colbert Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Gargis was born October 6, 1924, to John Henry and Lucy Morgan Gargis, in Leighton, Alabama. Mr. Gargis was a veteran of the United States Army, and served in World War II. Bruce served as a Colbert County Commissioner and numerous terms as commission chairman. He was also a former business owner, and a member of the Baptist church.
Mr. Gargis is preceded in death by sisters, Mary B. Riner and Mildred L. Nichols; brothers, Tony Gargis, Lester Gargis, Howard Gargis, Willard Gargis, Billy Gargis, and John Gargis; mother of his children, Mattie Ligon Gargis; and step-son, Mike Thompson.
Survivors include wife, Dorothy Kyle Gargis; sons, David Bruce Gargis (Wanda) of Sheffield, and Thomas Wade Gargis of Priceville; step-daughters, Vicki Spangler of Decatur, and Kathy Richards (Mark) of Daphne; brother, Luther O’Neal Gargis (Leigh) of Muscle Shoals; grandchildren, Jared Gargis of Huntsville, Scarlotte Gargis Smith (Todd) of Priceville, and Scott Gargis (Tina) of Decatur; and great grandchildren, Sawyer and Colton Smith of Priceville, Jessica and Andrew Schrimsher of Trinity; and Gabriel Loustaunau of Sheffield.
Pallbearers will be Roland Gargis, Tony Gargis, Roger Gargis, Jared Gargis, Scott Gargis, and Cody Austin.
