FLORENCE-On Friday, March 15 the  Boy Scouts of America – Westmoreland District located at 520 Westmoreland Road (Camp Westmorland) in Florence held a ribbon cutting in honor of their new District Executive, Alexandria (Ali) Bratcher.

Friends and family of the Boy Scouts were on hand to help with the celebration and the Shoals Chamber helped with dedication by sponsoring a good old-fashioned ribbon cutting.

Now a little information about Camp Westmoreland:

“Camp Westmoreland is a 284-acre facility situated on the west bank of Shoal Creek just 8 miles northeast of Florence, Alabama. This camp, with its beautiful forest of hardwoods and pines, offers a great opportunity to Scouting units for short-term camping, Cub Scout activities, day camps and training events. Camp Westmoreland features a shower and bathroom facility and a newly renovated dining hall and conference facility. It also features recently constructed Adirondack shelters for camping groups.

Historic Camp Westmoreland has been hosting Boy Scouts and Camp events dating back to July 1929. One of the oldest Boy Scout Camps in the United States, it is listed on the Alabama Historical Commission Register of Landmarks and Heritage. It has a history that is matched by few Camps. Westmoreland has hosted famous visitors such as “The Singing Cowboy” Gene Autry to World Famous Photographer Jack Delano. Land on the north side of Camp was once owned in part by Chief Scout Citizen and President Theodore Roosevelt. Westmoreland served as the main Summer Camp for North Alabama for fifty years and over 70,000 Scouts have used the property.”

The Shoals Chamber captured the event in photos and we are pleased to present them to you here:
