Birdis Hicks Jones Birdis Hicks Jones went to be with the Lord on June 5, 2023, at the age of 94. She was born to A.M. and Thursey Hicks on July 19, 1928, the fifth of what would be six children. She met Donal Jones on Labor Day 1947, and married him just six weeks later. While they may not have advised such a quick courtship to other young couples, it certainly worked for them.

Birdis and Donal raised two children in Sheffield, Alabama, the place they came to call home.  Donal went to be with the Lord in June of 2004.

Birdis was known for her outstanding cooking, always baking lots of holiday treats to share with others. She was an excellent seamstress, making everything from school dresses, loungewear, formal dress, and even a wedding veil. She was meticulously organized – everything always neatly in its place. But greater than all of that was the passionate way she loved her family and was always available to help out.

Birdis was always involved in church. She spent many years singing alto in the choir at First Baptist Tuscumbia. After being widowed she returned to Jasper and Northside Baptist, where she had grown up. Most recently she had been a member at First Baptist Birmingham.

Birdis was preceded in death by her husband, Donal, parents A.M. and Thursey Hicks, brothers Oather Hicks and Sidney Ryan Hicks, sisters Oneida King, Derotha Cooner and Dorothy King.

She leaves behind a daughter, Donna Pettis (Jimmy), son David Jones (Dori) grandchildren Matthew Pettis (Jessica), Bethany Faucett (Ben), Kara Soaper (Troy), and great grandchildren Levi Pettis, Hunter Pettis, Madi Faucett, Mia Faucett, Colby Dyson and Dylan Dyson, and Malikia Soaper, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 9, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home, funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the Collins-Burke Chapel. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.  Rev. David Byrd and Dr. Jim Cooley will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Pettis, Ben Faucett, Jimmy King, Leslie Hicks, David Allen and Tim Love.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church Birmingham, or to the Homewood Church of Christ Hospital Apartment ministry.
