MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley has awarded grants totaling $491,515 for traffic safety enforcement in Cherokee, DeKalb, Etowah, Jackson, Madison and Marshall counties.
The grant funding covers overtime pay for officers conducting DUI checkpoints and increased patrols during the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign which runs for a couple of weeks before and during the Labor Day weekend and “Click It or Ticket” which takes place around Memorial Day. The funds also allow area law enforcement agencies to boost enforcement for local safe-driving campaigns throughout the year.
“Alabama’s traffic safety laws save lives by removing dangerous drivers from our roadways,” said Bentley. “Local police officers, deputies and state troopers are working long hours to enforce the law and provide motorists with a visible reminder to drive safely”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available to the state by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. ADECA administers a wide range of grant programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, workforce development, energy conservation, economic development, water resource management and recreation.
Bentley notified J. Patrick Simms, chief executive officer for the Etowah County Commission, that the grants had been approved. The commission is the fiscal agent for the grant.
