ATHENS – Katie Smith, a Management major and Human Resource Management minor from Decatur, was named the Athens State University Intern Student of the Year. As the Athens State University Intern Student of the Year, Smith was awarded a $100 gift card and recognition certificate with a letter from President Bob Glenn.
Smith was offered an internship in June 2015 with the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) where she works as an Administrative Support Assistant.
“In my position at SMDC, I was given training modules and courses to complete along with several orientation sessions for new employees,” stated Smith. “The training I have been exposed to has given me a deeper understanding of Human Resources, The Department of the Army, and allows me to stay focused on our mission of supporting the Warfighter.”
“Katie is a self-starter, very adaptable, and extremely dependable. She very quickly became one of the team, by helping out anyone in the office that required assistance,” stated Joyce M. Lenoir, her Supervisor at SMDC. “Nothing was beneath her or too hard to do. She took on work with a smile on her face and always with that wonderful attitude of hers.”
Smith has been active on campus in the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Society for Human Resource Management Student Chapter. During the 2015 – 2016 academic year she served as the SGA Treasurer.
Smith will go on to compete for the Intern Student of the Year for the state of Alabama. This title is awarded by the Alabama Association of Colleges and Employers (AACE). AACE is an organization for career development professionals and employers. Membership in this organization provides networking opportunities to benefit the state’s university students, their future employees as well as professional development. The mission of the organization is to provide resources for industry and education to partner to promote a competent and productive workforce. The State Intern Student of the Year will be announced on July 28 at the AACE Annual Conference held at the Hampton Inn in Gadsden, Alabama.
