ATHENS-Athens Fire and Rescue was notified today at 12:30 a.m. about the odor of fuel in the area of Hine Street and
Market Street.

Chief James Hand said a fuel leak was found at Fuel City, a gas station at that intersection.

Hand said Athens Fire and Public Works responded and attempted to contain it. However, heavy rains during
the early morning hours caused the fuel to enter Town Creek. He said there are reports of fuel odor along the
creek.

Hand said the spill does not impact the city’s drinking water source, which is Elk River.
Hand said the Alabama Department of Environmental Management is on the scene and is overseeing response
and remediation.
