Arthie was born on April 14, 1936 in Amory, MS to the late Cleat Carter and Ozell Mason Carter. He was many things. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather. He would be the first to tell you he wasn’t perfect. Arthie was hardworking, loving, and sometimes stubborn.
He loved being outside, especially fishing, camping, and taking trips in his younger years. In his later years, he still loved working outside, and by “working” we mostly mean breaking things for Travis to fix and telling Tim how to mow the grass. He was an incredibly talented self-employed mechanic who worked for the county and for anyone who needed his help. There was very little he couldn’t do, and he passed his love of tinkering on to his grandsons.
Arthie loved his children and grandchildren, but he absolutely lit up when his great-grandchildren came to visit. He spoiled them in every way he could think of by letting them play with his “toy” trucks, his magnetic letter board, and his bullhorn. He loved showing them his shop and sending them home with little treasures. Even when he could no longer tell them with words, there was never a question of whether they were loved. So much of Arthie will live on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even his great-great-grandchildren. The world is better because Arthie V. Carter was in it, and because of the legacy he leaves behind.
While our hearts grieve in his absence, we rejoice that he has been made whole and that he is once again with Sybil. Until we meet again, we’ll keep telling his stories, laughing at the memories and thanking God for the privilege of calling him ours.
Arthie leaves to cherish his memories, his two Daughters; Missy Hathcock (Travis), Sulligent, AL and Teresa Mordecai (Tim), Detroit, AL; one son in law, Hershel Ray King, Detroit, AL; 11 Grandchildren, 36 Great-Grandchildren, and 7 GG Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleat and Ozell Carter; beloved wife, Sybil Ray Smith; Daughter, Debra King; Son, Tony Carter; Brothers, J.C. Carter, Floyd Carter, Lecil Carter, and Ray Carter; Sisters, Maxine Boone, Opal Irvin, and Shirley Ann Carter.
