“On 2/17/14, Decatur Police responded to an assault call in the woods behind the Food World on 6th Ave SE. This area is popular with homeless people, who have set up assorted living quarters (tents) along the drainage creek.

43 Year old Doug Cowart was found in the woods bleeding heavily from an injury to his head. He was taken to Decatur-Morgan Hospital by ambulance. It was determined that Cowart had been hit in the head with a baseball bat, causing the injuries.

During the investigation, Officers received information that the offender had run across 6th Ave in an attempt to get away. Numerous Officers converged on the area in order to find him.

A short time later, Dispatch was advised that a suspicious person was behind Gateway Shopping Center, and was walking north.

Officer Marquin Birgans located the suspect as he was walking on 11th Ave and Buena Vista. When asked to return to the officer, the suspect ran. A foot pursuit ensued.

Ofc Birgans and Ofc Jon Sharp were able to capture the suspect, and after a brief struggle were able to take him into custody. No one was injured during the arrests.

He was charged with multiple misdemeanor charges (Public Intoxication, Harassment and Resisting Arrest) and placed in jail. He was later identified as the assailant by the victim and a witness.

On 2/19/14, Brendon Keith Dotson was arrested for the charge of Assault in the Second Degree. He is currently still in the Decatur City Jail, due to being on Probation. He is also currently on Probation in Morgan County for prior felony charges.

Dotson will be transferred to the Morgan Co Jail in lieu of a $2500 bond after he satisfies his probation charges in the City.

Doug Cowart was treated and released from the hospital.”
