TUSCUMBIA – The Colbert County Tourism Office is pleased to announce that two towns in Colbert
County are participating in the state’s Saturday Morning Walking Tours. Sheffield and Tuscumbia will
offer these tours every Saturday morning in April on April 4, 11, 18, and 25, beginning at 10 am. The
state has offered this recurring program for more than a decade, and it has become a beloved tradition
for many who attend.

These walking tours offer a unique opportunity to explore the rich history and architecture of some of
Alabama’s most historic and charming towns. Knowledgeable guides will share stories about the local
history, culture, and architecture while participants visit some of the area’s most beautiful and historic
buildings.

Jimmy Austin will lead Sheffield walking tours through the downtown business district on April 4 and 18,
and through the historic residential district on April 11 and 25.

In Tuscumbia, the April 4 tour will be led by Buddy Whitlock and will include a visit to the historic Steele
Place home on Main Street. On April 11, Dr. Lorie Johnson will lead a tour that includes visits to the log
cabin and the Winston Home. The April 18 tour will be led by John McWilliams and will focus on the
city’s rail history, including a visit to the historic Tuscumbia Depot. On April 25, Ron Hudson will lead a
tour that includes stops at Locust Hill and First Presbyterian Church.

As part of the nationwide America 250 celebration, these walking tours offer a meaningful way to
connect with the stories, places, and people that have shaped our communities. By exploring local landmarks and historic sites, participants can experience Colbert County’s role in the broader story of America and reflect on the history that continues to define us today.

“These walking tours are a wonderful way to experience the history and character of our communities,”
said Susann Hamlin, President and CEO of Colbert County Tourism. “We invite everyone to come out and
explore the beautiful neighborhoods of Tuscumbia and Sheffield while learning about the stories and
people who helped shape these towns.”

The Tuscumbia tours will depart from the old Coldwater Books building at the corner of Main and 6th
Streets, while the Sheffield tours will depart from Sheffield City Hall at 600 N Montgomery Avenue. Both
tours begin at 10 am and typically last between one hour and one and a half hours.

The Tuscumbia Walking Tours are sponsored by the Colbert County Historical Landmarks Foundation,
and the Sheffield tours are sponsored by the Sheffield Historic Commission.

The tours are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Colbert County Tourism
at 256-383-0783.
