Waffle House in Tuscumbia, Alabama joins Partnership for a Tobacco-Free Shoals in its efforts to encourage people to support smoke-free workplaces in the Shoals area.  This Monday, October 15, 2012  marks the beginning for a smoke-free workplace at the Waffle House, manager , Rene White is excited to be a part of giving the employees as well as the patrons a healthier environment to work and eat.  There were balloons and a lot of smiling faces.  Melanie Dickens, spokesperson for Partnership for a Tobacco-Free Shoals said there were several folks who said they would not be back now that Waffle House was smoke-free,  “But they have already come back to enjoy the food at the Waffle House.”

Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States and around the world. Every worker deserves protection from the dangers of secondhand smoke. During a typical shift in a smoke-filled workplace, a worker can breathe the equivalent of 1.5 to 2 packs of cigarettes. The Partnership for a Tobacco-Free Shoals believes that no one should have to choose between a job and good health.

In Alabama, the consequences of smoking are devastating. More than 7,000 Alabamians die

each year as a result of tobacco use, and another 1,000 youth and adults die from exposure to secondhand smoke.

Please come by and congratulate Waffle House on its efforts to protect nonsmokers and employees in workplaces.
