Annelie Mey Owens, M.D., died at the age of 96 on January 11, 2017. Annelie and her U.S. Army husband Chuck moved to Huntsville in the early 1960s and were thereafter lifetime residents of Huntsville. She was born in Berlin, Germany, and knew from an early age she wanted to be in medicine. She attended the University of Berlin to become a medical doctor in the early 40s.
Annelie met her love and future husband Chuck Owens (U.S. Army) while working at the American hospital in Berlin. He proposed and she agreed to travel to the U.S. after WWII to marry him and start a life here in the states. When she landed at the airport in New York it was the 4th of July, with flags lining the streets, and Annelie thought it was a special welcome for her!
Chuck and Annelie traveled throughout Europe over the years and moved to several states as part of Chuck’s Army career. Dr. Owens began her medical career in the U.S., and after Chuck’s retirement, they decided to stay in Huntsville. Along with their two children Ken and Cathey, they lived in Huntsville for the rest of their lives. Dr. Owens worked at Huntsville Hospital ER, Occupational Health on the Arsenal and Fox Army Hospital during her career as medical doctor.
When not working, Dr. Owens enjoyed gardening, reading, activities with friends and loved all little animals. She was a loving and feisty lady who always told it like it was.
In 2009 Annelie’s husband Chuck preceded her in death after a marriage of just over 62 years. Her survivors are daughter Cathey Carney; son Ken Owens; daughter-in-law Diane Owens; Diane’s brother Will Stutts; grandson Brandon Owens (Susan Trentham-Owens); granddaughter Stephanie Troup (John) and great grandchildren Hayden and Evan Troup. She also leaves her European family – nephew Reinhard Mey (Hella) and their family.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 15, 2017 from 1-2 pm at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, with services immediately following at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. (www.laughlinservice.com)
