altonAlton “Monk” Romine, age 84, passed away Sept. 30, 2015. He was a member of Bear Creek No. 1 Baptist Church.
He was born Dec. 11, 1930, in Florence, Alabama to Daniel Earl and Lura Mae
Romine.
Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, from 1-3 p.m. at Pinkard Funeral Home in
Haleyville, where the service will be held at 3 p.m. with Brother George Jones and Brother Richard Crumpton officiating. Burial will be at Winston Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Merv Romine, Will Romine, Randy Hicks, Stan Romine, Jerome
Morgan, and Mac McAlpine. Honorary pallbearers will be former players of Monk’s and Kenneth Barnes.
Alton “Monk” Romine began his career in athletics at Lauderdale County High School. He
played for their 1948 undefeated football team. From Lauderdale County High, Monk went
on to play one year at Itawamba Junior College. He then was a three-year letterman in
both football and basketball while he attended Florence State (UNA). Following his
collegiate career, Monk played seven years of professional football. He signed with the
Chicago Bears and later played for the Green Bay Packers and the Canadian Football League.
After playing professional football, Monk began his coaching career at Phillips High School. Monk also coached for a brief time at Phil Campbell High School. He then returned
to Phillips High where he coached until his retirement. Monk was passionate about
coaching. He coached football, basketball, and track and also served as the athletic
director. His love for sports and his team showed both in his coaching and the overall
administration of the Phillips High School’s athletic department. After his retirement, Monk
was able to coach his only grandson, Will, in Dixie Youth baseball and park and
recreation basketball. Monk was known to all his players as “Papa Monk.”
In 1996, Monk was inducted into the University of North Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. He has since been inducted into the Lauderdale County, Marion County, and Franklin County Sports Hall of Fame.
Monk is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years, Rebekah Cagle Romine; sons, Stan
and Merv Romine; sister, Annette Harris; grandson, Will Hughes Romine, wife, Christe
Lee; great-granddaughters, Misty Elizabeth “Emme” and Andi Christine Romine; and
“soon-to-be” great-grandson, Benjamin Alton Romine. He spent the last 33 years of his lifedevoted to his family especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Florissa Martinez, and granddaughter, Misty Elizabeth Romine.
