Alfred Delano Poole, 82, of Nashville, Tennessee and former longtime resident of Decatur, elder son of Ethel Osborne Poole and Enoch Poole, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 29, 2016.
Predeceased by his parents and daughter, Laurie Patricia Poole. He’s survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart of 63 years, Patricia McClellan Poole; daughter, Melisa Currey; granddaughters, Sarah McClellan Currey and Ellen Eastman Currey; siblings, Donald Poole and Jean Austin.
Al was a southern gentleman and farmer who was known for being noble, sweet, handy with a hammer, a family man, brave, a reader of Louis L’Amour novels, honorable, strong, and tender. A friend to all, he’ll be missed by the residents at Belmont Village where he never passed an opportunity to help a lady or jokingly offer to bail the men out of jail. He enjoyed travel and telling stories of London, which he said he’d visited 22 times.
A fan of Alabama football, he purchased tickets since 1964, his favorite chant being “Roll Tide Roll.” Thanks to SEC Network for making his last years easier. He watched Alabama football and all of the replays 3 or 4 times. As point guard at Priceville High School, he made the winning goal in the 1951 State Championships and missed the 1952 semi-state playoff with appendicitis; he and his brother, Donald were inducted into the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame. One of Al’s favorite possessions was a photo of his winning goal published in newspapers.
As an Army Medic in the Korean War, he served at Fort Sam Houston and enjoyed building and maintaining the baseball field for Col. Watts. Al was a favorite of the Colonel who loved to hear Al’s Alabama accent, and Al was ushered ahead of officers who were in line to see the Colonel, irritating a few. A graduate of Athens College, he was a NASA price analyst for 33 years at Redstone Arsenal, working on the space lab, shuttle and numerous rockets. After retirement he began his love affair with golf. He was the essence of love, a Christian man of integrity, a fine father, grandfather and husband. His word was his bond, and his presence will be missed on this earth.
