James Cooper Johnson (89) of Rogersville, Alabama went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 9, 2025, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Johnson was born July 2, 1935, in Leighton, Alabama to John and Thelma Johnson.
Cooper loved his God and country and valued the importance of education and hard work. After earning several advanced degrees, he dedicated his lifelong career to the education of young people. He taught high school at Lauderdale County High School in Rogersville, Alabama where he served as Principal for many years prior to retiring in 1993.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet Marie Johnson of Florence, Alabama; and his sister, Sarah Jefferies of Tuscumbia, a much-loved niece, Jami Jefferys Wright, husband Ricky, and their two sons, Rick J. Wright and Will Wright.
Mr. Johnson was actively involved in the Rogersville community having served as founder the Optimist Club and served multiple terms as president. Mr. Johnson was involved in many civic organizations and served on many different Boards of Directors. Mr. Johnson was a man of conviction and strong faith in God. He was actively involved in the First Baptist Church of Rogersville where he was honored as a Life Deacon Emeritus. While education was very important to Mr. Johnson, even more important was for the students he taught to have a strong faith in God and a desire to live a life in accordance with His will.
