Alex ‘Ted’ Theodore Matsos II, 64, passed away Saturday, December 30. Ted was born in Birmingham, AL and graduated from Huntsville High School in 1971. He was preceded in death by his brother, Major Chris Matsos (U.S. Army) and his father, restaurateur Alex Matsos of Michael’s Restaurant (Huntsville).

Ted began his career in the banking business in the early 70’s, serving in various roles ranging from IT and bank fraud specialist at People’s Bank and Colonial Bank, to Assistant Vice President of Operations at Bank Alabama.

After years in the financial world and transitioning through three bank mergers, Ted returned to his roots of the family restaurant tradition with his passion for cooking. He opened Papou’s Greek Cuisine on South Side Square in downtown Huntsville in 2003, which has remained a downtown staple until the present. Ted was also a long-standing board member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of Huntsville.

Ted is survived by his mother, Florence Matsos; sister, Helen Matsos; brother, Tim Matsos and wife, LeeAnn; and their daughters, Elizabeth Matsos Stechmann, Annette Matsos Perry, and Maria Matsos.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, at Holy Cross-Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 3021 University Drive. The funeral service will be held the following day at 12 noon, also at the Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials for Ted may be made to the Holy Cross-Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of Huntsville.
