TUSCUMBIA-The Alabama Music Hall of Fame will host a celebration for inductee Mack Vickery, who recently had his name forever attached to his birthplace of Lawrence County by having a lake named in his honor. The celebration will take place on Friday, March 11 at 3:00 p.m. at the Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia. Vickery Lake, located in the Loosier community just off Alabama Highway 157, was formed in 1983 to lessen the flow of water into Big Nance Creek to help keep Courtland from flooding. The process to name the lake involved
presenting support to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names which is part of the U.S. Department of Interior. The Lawrence County Commission, the Alabama Geographic Names Committee, and many individuals voiced their approval to honor Vickery. On December 10, 2015, the Board made it official. Inducted into the Hall in 2003, Vickery was the rockabilly sidekick of Jerry Lee Lewis and songwriter of his hits, “Rockin’ My Life Away” and “Meat Man” as well as having written “The Fireman”, “I’m the Only Hell Mama Ever Raised” and “Jamestown Ferry,” to name a few. “We are always especially grateful when an Alabama music achiever is shown recognition outside the music world,” director Dixie Griffin said. “It makes us all so proud for such an honor to go to one of ours, and for it to be so broadly supported by all the committees and commissions involved in making it happen.” Vickery’s son, Steve, a Michigan resident, will be in attendance at the March 11 celebration, and he looks forward to touring the Hall for the first time.
