Adelle Dixon Tiller, 97, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014 in Stuart, FL. She is survived by her daughters, Judith Mitchell of Stuart, FL and Rebecca Nadon of Garnerville, Nevada; grandchildren, James Arthur Shepherd, Kristen Adelle Shepherd, Leanda Rix, Forrest, Kevin, and Seth Griffin, Jared, Matthew, and Kyle Mitchell, and Cory and Kevin Magamoll; and great-grandchildren, Arthur and
Henry Denner, and Adelle Marie Rix.
Adelle was born on April 21, 1917 in Elba, Alabama to the late James C. Dixon and Bertie Lee Dixon. She was predeceased by her sister, Martha Dixon Halbert, and the late John Arthur Tiller, whom she married on October 10, 1942. Adelle graduated from David Lipscomb University with a degree in social work, and she worked as a child welfare services advocate until her retirement in 1976.
She and Arthur lived in Abbeville, AL before relocating to Madera, CA and later to Orange County, CA. Once retired, they enjoyed traveling all over the US, frequently with their grandchildren, James and Kristen. They returned to Madison, AL in the early 1980s where Adelle stayed until her move to Stuart, FL in 2004 to be close to her daughter, Judy, and son-in-law, Jim Mitchell.
Adelle was a member of the Monrovia Church of Christ in Madison, AL and later of the Stuart Church of Christ in Stuart, FL.
Adelle was a kind and loving friend, mother, and grandmother who made friends wherever she went, laughed easily, and was always optimistic. She was a passionate Tennessee college football fan, despite living in Alabama for decades. She loved ice cream, southern food, friendly gossip, and had a wonderful sense of adventure and fun that stayed with her until the end of her life, keeping her young at heart and always ready to see the bright side.
Visitation with the family will be on Friday, June 6 from 5-7 pm at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville, AL. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, June 7 at 2 pm. Burial will be in Huntsville Memory Gardens.
Donations in her memory may be sent to the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, 701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach, FL 33401, a place Adelle loved and spent many happy hours.
