James Carroll Riley, age 82, died on April 11, 2026. James was a lifelong resident of Florence, Alabama. James spent his life working hard. He believed in keeping busy. He was retired from Tee Jays Manufacturing but continued working outside tending his garden, taking care of his yard, and feeding his chicken and goats for as long as his health allowed.

James believed in speaking his mind but behind his tough exterior was a man who loved just as hard as he worked. He helped his wife, Thelma, through years of health problems and was there through her final illness. Nothing gave him more joy than the years he helped raise his grandson, Chase, and the time he spent with his grand-dogs, Jada and Gabby.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle and Knowlus Riley,; his wife of 58 years, Thelma Riley; and his sisters in law, Pat Riley and Barbara Riley.

James is survived by his daughter, Tanis Riley Roberson, and his son-in-law, John Roberson, who both sacrificed daily to help care for James in his final days. He also leaves behind his grandson, Chase Riley, and his wife, Michelle; his brothers, Billy Riley and Norman Riley; his sister, Wanda Faye Russell; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from noon to 1:00 at Greenview Funeral Home. A private graveside service will follow. Pastor Mack Dean will be officiating.

Pallbearers will be Greg Watkins, Bryan Morgan, Jeff Austin, Conrad Riley, Eddy Russell, and Wayne Riley.
