With sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Mary Jane (Shetters) Johnson, 95, at her home in Winchester TN on March 29, 2026, with family members at her side. She was born December 21, 1930, in Sherwood TN to Elijah and Nancy (Simmons) Shetters, (deceased).

Mary was a Christian, and a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church for many years. She is survived by six children: Mary Gale (William) Grimaud, Harvest, AL, Rick (Elizabeth) Johnson, Huntsville, AL, Pamela Seamonds, Winchester TN, Karon (Allen) Spurlock, Huntsville, AL, Bobbie (Randy) Maples, Gurley, AL, and John (Joyce) Johnson, Manchester, TN, 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn “Jean” Taylor of Rainesville, AL, and a brother, Mike Shetters of Kissimmee FL.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, George Herbert Johnson, and two grandsons, Michael “Scott” Key and Jesse Spurlock; brothers, William Dean, Roosevelt, MacArthur (Mac) and Elijah Shetters, and sisters, Gladys Shetters, Shirley Powell, Fannie Swaim, Rose Robinson, Nan Hill, Georgia Maxwell, Edith Sons, and Christine Simmons.

As the wife of an enlisted member of the military, there were times when Mary’s husband was deployed and she remained at home to raise their six children. Mary worked in the healthcare industry as a nursing assistant and as an anesthesia technician in the operating room until her retirement. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and working side by side with him on their family history and genealogy. She had a passion for reading, and she especially loved historical and religious based novels. Above all else, she loved reading her Bible, listening to Southern Gospel music, and spoiling her grandchildren

Mary was loved by everyone who knew her, and she will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her calm demeanor, and her heart filled with love for her Lord and Savior, and her large family.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the nurses and support staff at Amedysis Hospice for the compassionate and professional care they provided for our mother during her final days.

A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, April 6, 2026, in the chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home at 12:00 noon, with Pastors Ray Gardner and Johnny Mayes officiating. Public visitation will be at 11:00 AM, prior to services. Interment will follow at Cowan-Montgomery Cemetery.
