James Calvin Powell, 72, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. Calvin was born on July 17, 1953, in Aurora, Illinois. He was a hardworking man of many trades throughout his life. His work included time on oil rigs in Oklahoma, employment in a furniture factory, and clearing power line rights-of-way alongside his father.
Calvin loved his family, his friends, and his church family dearly. He enjoyed bowling and was a true sports enthusiast. Whether coaching his children when they were young or watching a game on television, he always had a love for sports and the time spent with those around him.
Survivors include his wife, Teena Powell, his brother, Neil Powell (Debbie), his daughters, Michelle George and Melissa Powell, his grandchildren, Taylor Staser (Bray), Austin George, Kyleigh George, and Ryder George, and his 2 great-grandchildren, Stella and Litzleigh.
He was preceded in death by his father, NW Powell, his mother, Lena Hinshaw, and his brother, Timothy Don Powell.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 2PM at Friendship Baptist Church with Bro. Jason Davis officiating. Visitation will begin at 11AM and continue to service time. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Austin George, Bray Staser, Chad Bivens, Austin Rayburn, Devin George, and Stephen McBrayer.
