Robert Barry Hooie, 82, of Athens, passed away at home on March 3, 2026. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather (Poppie), and friend. Barry was born in Athens, AL, on July 7, 1943, to Robert Cornelius and Betty Maude Ball Hooie. He had a full life dedicated to serving God, his country, his family, and his fellow man.
Barry was a member of Westview church of Christ in Athens and served as an elder for 19 years. Barry served 30+ years in the US Army National Guard, part time and full time, retiring in October 1996. He also served as a Green Beret in service to his country. After retirement, he continued his service by teaching Junior ROTC in Tusaloosa County High School and Northport High School. He then pursued his second vocation for 20+ years as a Psychotherapist at Decatur General West Behavioral Medicine, touching many lives through counseling. He was a member of American Legion Post 49 in Athens, AL. He helped youth pursue scholarships by helping with the American Legion sponsored oratorical contest. He also supported youth by working with the Boy Scouts of America Venturing Program and with the Blue and Gray Rifle Pistol Club with the Pot Shots program.
Barry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Margie Brown Hooie, of Athens; children: Erik Hooie (Jamie), of Montgomery, AL, Trevor Hooie (Katie), of Hoover, AL, and Amanda (Matt) Nunley, of Elkmont, AL; and his beloved grandchildren: Eli Lasley Hooie, Robert Clay Noble Hooie, Hunter Jay Nunley, and Sophia Pearl Nunley.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Robert Cornelius and Betty Maude Bell Hooie; and his brother, Clayburn Phillip Hooie.
The funeral will be Friday, March 6th, 2026, at 2:00pm at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, Athens, AL. Burial will at Roselawn Cemetery, Athens, AL. Friends and family may visit Thursday, March 5th, from 5:00-8:00pm at Limestone Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Jay Hooie, Mike Brown, Freddie Hooie, Scott Bobo, Michael Valenzuela, and Scott Claxton. Honorary pallbearers will be Eli Lasley Hooie, Robert Clay Hooie, Hunter Jay Nunley, and Sophia Pearl Nunley.
