Gary Eugene Smallwood Gary E. Smallwood, age 78, of Decatur, Alabama, passed away on February 7, 2026, at Athens‑Limestone Hospital. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 11, 2026 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Decatur Brown Service Funeral Home, 711 Memorial Drive SW, Decatur, AL., followed by 2:30 PM graveside services at Roselawn Cemetery.

Gary was born May 25, 1947, in Decatur to Charles and Juanita Smallwood, Gary lived a life marked by hard work, generosity, and a deep love for the people around him.

Gary’s career began at Monsanto, where he developed the strong work ethic that would define his life. He later entered law enforcement, serving both the Hartselle Police Department and Morgan County Sheriff’s with dedication and integrity. After his years in public service, Gary transitioned into the automotive industry, where he built a long and successful career as a car salesman with several local dealerships, but selling Towncars at Cloverleaf Lincoln Mercury was his favorite.

His natural warmth and genuine care for others made him exceptional in his field. Gary earned numerous honors, including multiple “Salesman of the Month” awards and national recognition as a top salesperson. Customers remembered him not just for his professionalism, but for the kindness and honesty he brought to every interaction. Gary was also an avid Alabama fan attending games as long as he was able.

Gary is survived by his two sons, Stanley (Dawna) of Athens and Rodney (Danielle) of Belmont, NC; sister Anita Branum and Randy Smallwood; and 8 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Charles and Roger.

He was known as a loving, gentle, and giving man—someone who never hesitated to help others and who made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were touched by his kindness. We find peace today knowing he’s in Heaven waiting for us all to join him.

The family extends special thanks to Dr. Ken Collins, nurses and staff at Athens- Limestone Hospital and Dr. Matthew Hanserd, nurses and staff at Athens-Limestone Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at 2:30 PM at the graveside of Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM at Decatur Brown Service Funeral Home.
