Dixie Mae Ruimveld Hawkinson, 77, of Madison, AL, passed away on January 23rd, 2026, in Madison, AL.

Dixie M.R. Hawkinson was born in PawPaw, Michigan to Louis Levon and Barbara June (German) Dunn on January 24th, 1948. She would be the eldest of four siblings. She married George Warren Mendenhall on April 22nd, 1967 in Oxenhill, Maryland. They would welcome a daughter, Heather Janine, in October 1971 before divorcing in February 1975. She would later marry Charles Leonard Hawkinson on June 13th, 1981 in Portage, Michigan. They too would welcome a daughter, Barbara Amelia, in September 1985 and spent the next 44 years together.

She enjoyed many careers in her life but her passion was for volunteering. A woman of deep faith she helped found two churches in her lifetime, St. Matthews Episcopalian and St. Andrews Anglican where she worked as the church secretary until retirement.

Dixie M.R. Hawkinson is preceded in death by her birth parents: Louis Dunn and Barbara (German) Treadway; adoptive father William Ruimveld, and stepfather William Treadway as well as her siblings; brothers: Michael Ruimveld, William Ruimveld Jr., and sister: Bonnie Ruimveld.

Dixie M.R. Hawkinson is survived by her husband, Charles Hawkinson; her two daughters: Dr. Heather Mendenhall and Barbara Hawksinson; her three grandchildren: Lauren Bonnett, Andrew Bonnett and Addison McLemore; and her great-grandson Kasey Leonardo.

Geoff Hatley (Rector, St. Andrew’s Anglican Church) will be officiating.
