ATHENS-The City of Athens is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and preparedness of its community ahead of the anticipated winter storm.

The Street Department will mobilize crews to address potential road hazards. According to the Street Department, personnel will be on duty early Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings surveying roads. They will be prepared to sand any problem areas immediately upon identification to maintain the safest possible driving conditions. The city urges residents to exercise extreme caution if they must travel during the inclement weather.

The Athens Electric Department has also taken steps to prepare for possible weather disruptions. The department has already secured and staged extra equipment specifically for the winter storm. According to the Electric Department, additional crews have been placed on standby, ready to be deployed to address any major power outages that may occur as a result of the weather.

“The safety of our residents is always our top priority,” Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell said. “We encourage everyone to complete their preparations as soon as possible. Our teams are prepared to work around the clock to keep our community safe.”

Also of note, as of right now sanitation will run as scheduled so please have your bins to the curb by 6:00AM, according to the Sanitation Department.

Furthermore, due to the inclement weather all ball games scheduled for tomorrow have been canceled, according to the Parks and Recreation Department. The Recreation Center will delay its opening until 10:00 AM tomorrow. A decision regarding center hours going forward, after the delayed opening, will be made by officials based on current weather conditions.

Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel if there are hazardous road conditions and to report any emergencies to the appropriate services.
