Phyllis Ann Tirey Harmon of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away at age 82 on January 6, 2026.

Phyllis was born in Major, Kentucky to Edith and Bradley Tirey on August 11, 1943. She attended high school at Simon Kenton, graduating in 1960. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Kentucky University, graduating in 1964. She later added a Master’s degree in education from Alabama A&M University.

She was honored to teach 1st grade for more than 45 years. Many students came back to visit as adults long after they had been her students. In addition to teaching, Phyllis was an active member of Weatherly Heights Church of Christ. She often taught children’s Bible classes there. Family and close friends were always a priority to her. Phyllis enjoyed traveling, especially going back to Kentucky. She treasured her family and friends.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Tim Harmon (Kristi) of Cypress, Texas, Chris Harmon (Monna) of Huntsville, and daughter, Gina Moriarty of Astoria, New York; five granddaughters, whom she adored, Hannah Harmon, Aoife Moriarty, Raychel Harmon, Aine Moriarty and Saoirse Moriarty. Phyllis had an unbreakable bond with her siblings, Carol Bach (Will), of Winchester, Kentucky, Ronnie Tirey, (Sharon), of Danville, Kentucky, Judy Alford (David), of Kings Mountain, Kentucky, and Janet Hogan (Ken), of Winchester, Kentucky; and sister-in-law, Rose Marie Wood (Bobby) of Dothan, Alabama.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald Harmon; her sister, Carol Bach; and her wonderful mother, Edith Tirey.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, 2320 Bob Wallace Ave SW, Huntsville, AL 35805. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Mike McLemore of Weatherly Heights Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery, 202 Maple Hill Street SE, Huntsville, AL 35801.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation is considered to free2teach.org, which provides school supplies for teachers.
