Alvin Mackenzie Hughes, Jr., known as “Jr.”, 93, of Fort Payne, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2025. He was born February 4, 1932 in DeKalb County, Alabama, to the late Alvin Hughes and Velma Beaty Hughes. For over 50 years, he worked at the Fort Payne Stockyard. He was a cattle farmer – raising his herds brought him great joy, but it did not compare to his favorite role: PawPaw to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Shaunathan Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the 2 p.m. hour of service.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years Clydia Hughes; son Danny Mack Hughes and wife Lisa; grandchildren Kelly Jones and husband Brian and Justin Hughes and wife Shelby; great-grandchildren Emma, Harper, and Landry Jones and Isbabelle and Mack Hughes; brother Johnny Lee Hughes; sisters Nellie Kelley and Sara Eberhart; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Molvelean Greenwood, Alene Keith, Laymon Hughes, and Roy Gene Hughes.
Wilson Funeral Home and Crematory of Fort Payne is in charge of services.
