HUNTSVILLE-When it comes to national defense, Alabama is not just keeping pace — we’re setting the trajectory. With the recent decision to permanently locate the U.S. Space Command headquarters at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, our state is entering a bold new chapter of strategic significance.
This long-awaited announcement affirms what we’ve known all along: Alabama is uniquely positioned to lead on matters of national security.
This move brings with it approximately 1,400 new jobs over the next five years, but the implications go far beyond the numbers. It places Redstone Arsenal — already home to the Army Materiel Command, Missile Defense Agency, the Space and Missile Defense Command and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center — at the heart of America’s space-based military operations.
With defense industry titans like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman operating nearby, Huntsville offers a synergy of mission-critical infrastructure and unmatched technical talent. It’s the right decision, for the right reasons, in the right place.
Alabama’s global footprint in defense is expanding, too. This month, a Commerce team, alongside several Alabama-based defense firms, traveled to London for DSEI 2025, one of the world’s premier defense industry exhibitions.
Looking forward, Alabama’s defense sector is more than just strong — it’s purpose-built for the future. Whether it’s hosting the next generation of space operations in Huntsville or promoting our capabilities on the international stage, we are proving that Alabama is a true command center for national security innovation. And the best is still ahead.
Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal already hosts the Army Materiel Command, Missile Defense Agency, the Army Space and Missile Defense Command and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. In addition, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman and other defense companies have a major presence in Huntsville.
Together, that means Alabama’s “Rocket City” provides a unique synergy of expertise and infrastructure.
“Huntsville is the perfect choice for U.S. Space Command headquarters,” said Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce. “The region offers a rare combination of mission-critical infrastructure, a highly skilled workforce and a deep legacy of innovation in aerospace and defense.
“There’s no community in the nation better positioned to support the long-term success of Space Command and its strategic objectives,” she added.
