Russell Eugene Lewis, 74, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025. Born in Marshall, Texas, on December 8, 1950, he was a devoted father, gifted architect, decorated martial artist, and lifelong mentor. Russell’s legacy lives on in the family he nurtured and the structures he helped shape.
Russell earned his degree in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, where his passion for design and form took root and flourished. With a keen eye for innovation and a mind wired for precision, he built a remarkable career, leaving his mark on countless structures—and on the lives of those he worked with.
He served as chairperson for both the Kirkwood Planning and Zoning Commission and the Architectural Review Board, helping shape the civic landscape of his community with care and vision. One of his proudest professional contributions was leading design efforts in the first major expansion of The Magic House in Kirkwood, Missouri—an iconic project that reflected his commitment to enriching spaces for families and future generations.
Russell’s love for chess began in childhood and remained a lifelong passion. He found in the game both strategy and serenity—a reflection of the thoughtful, deliberate way he approached life. Whether in competition or casual play, he brought the same quiet intensity that defined so much of his character.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Russell was a highly accomplished martial artist, earning recognition and respect for his discipline, skill, and commitment to the art. His strength, both physical and mental, reflected the principles he carried into every part of his life.
He was also a teacher—formally and informally—always ready to guide, share knowledge, or offer a quiet, dry wit that made you think twice and smile once more.
Above all, Russell was a father who instilled in his sons the unshakable strength of brotherhood. To him, family was foundation—something to be designed with care, built with intention, and held together with love.
He is survived by his brother James Lewis and his sisters Sherry Lewis, Gwen Lewis, and Veronica Lewis. He leaves behind his sons Brandon M. Lewis (Julianna), Kristopher A. Lewis, and Jonathan W. Lewis; and his cherished grandchildren Tygerlilly, Maximus, Apollo, and Lennox Lewis. He is also remembered by Patricia Taylor, the mother of his children, with whom he shared the joy of raising their sons.
He was preceded in death by his parents Eugene Lewis and Lorraine Lewis, as well as his brothers Vernon Lewis and Percy Lewis.
Russell Eugene Lewis will be remembered not just for what he built, but for what he built into those around him—resilience, love, and legacy.
