Bob was born on November 15, 1942, in Akron, Ohio to Gerald William & Ethel Catherine Betz. He joined the U.S Navy, proudly serving his nation and making a career in the Navy life until he retired in 1980 as YNCS, Senior Chief Yeoman. He was active in several submarines, including USS Andrew Jackson, Atlantic Fleet Polaris, USS James Polk, and USS James Madison. He retired with several awards and metals, including Navy Achievement Medal w/1 Gold Star/Meritorious Unit Commendation w/1 Bronze Star/Battle “E” Good Conduct Award, (4)/Enlisted Submarine Insignia/SSBN Deterrent Patrol Pin w/3 Silver and 3 Gold Stars / National Defense Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon / Comsubron 16 LTR. Even after his retirement, he remained very involved with the Veterans.
Even though the military was such a big part of his life, he also served as Scout Master with the Boy Scouts for many years. Bob was a devoted husband to the love of his life, a hard worker, a dedicated teacher, and last but not least, a devout Catholic. He taught at schools in Goosecreek South Carolina, Fresno California, Carlton Georgia, and Sacred Heart Catholic School in Anniston, Alabama. Along the way he touched many lives and became a Godfather to many kids who looked up to him for his guidance and support.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald William Betz; mother, Ethel Catherine Bell Betz; sister, Pamela Betz; and close family friends, Frederick & Dana Burns.
He leaves to cherish his memories; his beloved wife of 58 years, Adelaide “Addie” Julia Reuss Betz; his God-daughters, Erika Burns Sullivan and Regina Burns Cantrell; former students, several Godchildren; and a host of friends.
A memorial service will be at held at a later date at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Times will be announced.
