KNOXVILLE, TN – Robotics programs across the region are helping prepare students for future careers, and now the Tennessee Valley Authority and Bicentennial Volunteers are offering awards to enhance existing programs or assist schools and qualifying non-profits who are beginning new ones.

Similar to the TVA STEM Awards program, teachers and robotics team sponsors in public or private schools, grades K-12, can now apply for an award up to $5,000. Nonprofit organizations serving youth ages 5-18 may also apply. Applicants must be in the TVA service area and receive electricity from a local power company served by TVA. A total of $400,000 will be awarded this year to successful applicants. The funds can be used to purchase robotics kits, tools and materials, and to pay entry fees for competitions. The award can also be used to begin a robotics program.

“TVA has long supported educators and students with STEM awards and this robotics awards program is another step in helping our region’s young people access tools that can help them be successful after graduation,” said Jeff Lyash, TVA president and chief executive officer. “Supporting youth is part of our mission of service in the Tennessee Valley region and this program will support those who are educating students in a field that will continue to grow.”
The deadline to apply at tva.com/robotics is May 15. Successful applicants will be notified this summer.
“At BVI, we are privileged to make life better for the people of the Valley region through initiatives like the robotics programs,” said Kathy Black, president of BVI. “We are investing in the education of our future workforce—helping to build a pipeline of skilled professionals for TVA and other businesses in the region.”

Robotics fosters creativity, problem-solving and teamwork — skills that are essential for success in the workforce of tomorrow. By introducing students to robotics at an early age, educators are helping students develop critical thinking skills vital to future employment opportunities.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is the nation’s largest public power supplier, delivering energy to more than 10 million people across seven southeastern states. TVA has one of the most diverse energy systems – including nuclear, hydro, solar, gas, and advanced technologies. To prepare for the future, TVA is making significant investments in its power system toward new generation and transmission.
