Gloria Rose Smith, 86, of Athens, AL peacefully entered into the arms of her Savior on Sunday, January 26, 2025.Mrs. Smith was born June 26, 1938, in Athens, AL to Clarence Rose and Queenie Griggs Rose. She graduated from Athens High School where she was a member of the Athens High School Marching Band. She was employed at the Army Missile Command. She was a loving and faithful wife to her husband Lowell Curtis Smith with whom she shared 65 years of marriage. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, always supporting her family in every way.
Mrs. Smith was a faithful servant of the Lord. She was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and served in many ways including teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Awana and Mission Friends. She also served as Women’s Missionary Union director. She especially enjoyed singing in the choir. Her life was defined by love for God and her family. She spent countless hours in prayer, her home was a place of comfort, filled with the warmth of her cooking and the joy of her hospitality. She had a gift for making everyone feel loved and valued.
She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Bailey and husband Jeffrey; one son, Steven Lowell Smith and wife Tara. Six grandchildren Clay Bailey and wife Lisa Jean; Justin Smith and wife Pattie; Matthew Bailey and wife Paige; Nathan Smith and Fiancee Lacy Gross; Emily Richardson and husband Carter; Natalie Friesen and husband Micah. Eight great grandchildren Ford Thomas, Landon Smith, Sawyer Townsend, Jackson Bailey, Macy Jean Bailey, Luke Bailey, Levi Smith and Ava Grace Bailey; sister June Street and husband Oliver; brother-in-law Milton Looney as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Curtis Dean Smith, daughter-in-law Pam Smith, infant grandson Curtis Blake Smith, siblings George Rose, Mildred Collier, Margie Looney and Griggs Rose.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 30th from 10:00 am – 12 noon and a celebration of life service at Emmanuel Baptist Church at 12 noon with Dan Hughes and Ron Oakley officiating. Her family invites all who knew and loved her to join in remembering a life well-lived, one that glorified God in all things. Burial to follow at Athens City Cemetery.
