Charlie Jones passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2024. He was born April 12, 1929, in Morgan County, to Prince Thomas Jones and Pattie Erin Stephenson Jones.
Charlie is a veteran of the United States Army and the Korean War.
Charlie is a graduate of Decatur High School and Auburn University. At Auburn he earned a Masters in Fisheries Biology and met Landra Louise Mays. They married in 1955 and shortly after they moved to Liberia, Africa. For 5 years, they lived in the native villages and constructed tilapia ponds to help feed the local communities. When they returned to Decatur, AL, Charlie continued to work for US Fish and Wildlife Service until 1981. After Charlie retired from that position, he worked for the City of Decatur as Safety Coordinator until 1997.
Charlie’s true passion remained fishing, but he loved the church and was an active member of the choir for decades. He worked with the youth at First Baptist Church. He was active in Sunday School, leading the singing for the seniors before class for many years.
Later in life he added golf to his many activities, and soon was a regular on local courses with old and new friends and competitors.
He is preceded in death by parents Pattie Erin Jones and Prince Thomas Jones; spouse of 58 years Landra Louise Jones; and brother, Prince Thomas Jones, Jr.
He is survived by his daughter, Patti Byrd Collier and her husband Bobby; son, Thomas L. Jones and his wife Lori; granddaughter, Autumn C. Rook (who spent many afternoons with her Popee playing and making snacks) and her husband David; grandsons, Matthew Carroll and his wife Lanta, Michael Carroll, Justin Collier and his partner Randi Knox, and Ries Collier and his wife Katherine; great grandchildren Riley Carroll, Emory Carroll, Lily Grace Collier and Richard Collier.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Hartselle, The Food Bank of North Alabama, or Feeding Families of Alabama on Mt Tabor Road, Hartselle, Alabama.
