Alice Ann Lane Wells, 89, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2024, in Russellville, AL. She was born on February 20, 1935, in Guide Rock, NE to Andrew and Addie Arrants Lane.
Alice was the loving wife of William C. (Bill/Buck) Wells for 64 years. Together they shared a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and many travels. They met in Wichita, Kansas, where Bill was stationed in the Air Force. They married in 1954 and moved to Russellville AL not long after. Alice felt like she was in a foreign country, but soon mastered the Southern Drawl, which she kept always. They moved to Gallatin, TN in 1961 where she held a variety of positions, one of which was serving as a Juvenile Referee for Judge Hamilton, even stepping in as an interim judge, possibly becoming the first female judge in the county. They made many close friends while living there, remaining in touch with them throughout the years. In Gallatin, they begin their lifelong interest in square dancing which took them all over the world to conventions and dances. In 1978 they returned to AL, after Alice extracted a promise from Bill to build her a log cabin, which he did. They enjoyed entertaining family and friends that came to visit them at their lovely lakeside cabin. They moved to Blue Hill, NE in 1992 where she and Bill lived for 26 years. Alice said she never thought she would return to NE, but she was glad that she did. They had many friends and she and Bill enjoyed many dinners and card games with brother Vaden, his wife Mary Ann and sister Margy and her husband Gerald.
Both she and Bill enjoyed traveling around visiting their family and friends spread across the US. Bill and Alice both would say that her middle name was “GO”. She and Bill were avid attendees of auctions, yard sales and antique stores always adding to her many collections. When asked about all of her “stuff”, she would say, “I am a collector, not a hoarder.” She loved collecting, cooking, she loved all the ladies in her “Ladies Bible Class” at the Hastings Church of Christ, her family, and her God.
She is survived by sister Margaret (Gerald) Hartman, brother Vaden Lane, and her 4 children Will Wells (Pam), Teena Wells (Ron), Tim Wells (Yuko), Laura Pruett (Donnie). Known by all of her grandchildren as “Granny”, she adored every one of her 9 grandchildren: Jacob and John Wells, Mary Alice and Tai Wells, Daniel Pruett, Mandy Pruett, Damon Forbes, Layla Stewart, and Kia Conda. 11 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. As Aunt Alice she loved, and was loved by, all her nieces and nephews. Sometimes she would make them potato soup after “discussing” with brother Vaden exactly what were the correct ingredients and methods.
She is predeceased by her parents, four sisters, one brother and seven in-laws from both sides of the family.
