Former Huntsville native, Ruth Lowry Spragins Hill passed away on August 26, 2022, after battling ALS. She was born in Huntsville, AL on October 12, 1953.
She was a member of the Junior League of Huntsville, serving on such notable committees including the one that started Panoply as well as the committee that helped produce the ‘Selections’ Cookbook. She served as a member of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild, and on the board of the March of Dimes where she chaired the Gourmet Gala. She enjoyed serving her community and was even named Most Outstanding Huntsvillian. Her volunteer work included Crestwood Hospital, the Twickenham Historic Preservation District Association and East Clinton Elementary school. Lowry was lifelong member of the Church of the Nativity, Episcopal where she enjoyed helping with the annual bazaar as well vacation Bible school.
She was a needle pointing guru, but her true passion was the written word. She amazed people with her exquisite penmanship and for over 34 years she worked as a professional calligrapher. Clients have included the White House, country music stars, hundreds of brides and even a prince or two.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Anna Ruth White and father, Marion Beirne Spragins, Jr. She is survived by her three daughters, Amy Wellingham (Larry Sato), Whitney Heaps (Will) and Meghan Allen; as well as three grandchildren, Anna Withers Wellingham, Lee Wellingham and Vivian Heaps; and a brother, Beirne Spragins, III. The family would also like to thank her caregiver and loving partner, Kenneth Bartlett.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 30 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Maple Hill Cemetery with Father Michael Goldsmith presiding.
