David Eugene Waddell, age 77, of the New Canaan Community of Arab, Alabama passed away Friday, May 13, 2022 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Waddell was born on August 17, 1944 at a military hospital in Atascadero, California to Norman Edward and Pauline Pilgrim Waddell, the very day his father was shipped overseas for duty in World War 2. At the age of 6 weeks, David and his mother took a train from California to Edwardsville, Alabama in order to be closer to her parents during the war. David married Barbara Phillips, his high school sweetheart, when only 18 years old and she was 16. They rode the school bus together and finished high school as a married couple. They were looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary when Barbara passed away.
David was a member of Liberty Church in Arab, Alabama, of which he truly loved. He enjoyed nature and was a Master Gardener. He loved working outdoors, landscaping, and his tractor. He was actively involved with tracing his family genealogy. Mr. Waddell retired after a long career involved with the carpentry and construction business.
Cherishing memories of David are his children, Jeff Waddell (Melinda), Kathy Kelly (Jason), Jesse Waddell (Mary), and Elizabeth Waddell Schirmer (Lee); brother, Joel “Joe” Lee Waddell (Christy); sisters, Barbara Vess (Kenneth), Paula Waddell and Janie Tucker; thirteen grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Waddell was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Phillips Waddell; parents, Norman and Pauline Waddell, and two brothers, Steve Waddell and Tim Waddell.
A visitation will be held at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, Arab, Alabama on Saturday, May 21, 2022 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
Funeral service will follow the visitation hour beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Keith Hodges officiating.
Interment is to follow services immediately at the New Canaan Cemetery, Arab, Alabama in Cullman County.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Ethan Waddell, Nathan Waddell, Seth Waddell, Tony Highsmith, Jesse Waddell, and Ryan Moore.
