Roy Dwayne Lewis, 92, of Huntsville, Alabama, went to his heavenly home on Monday, March 14, 2022. He was born on April 21, 1929, on the family farm in Carroll County, Tennessee. He attended a one-room country school in his elementary years and graduated as valedictorian from McKenzie High School in 1946. He received his B.S. from Bethel University, and his M.S. from Memphis State.
Roy served in the U.S.A.F from 1948 – 1952. After his discharge he worked for Proctor and Gamble Defense Corp, Milan, TN. He began his DOD career at the Memphis General Depot, Memphis, TN. In 1960, he transferred to the Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal where he was the Budget Officer until he retired in January 1995. After retirement, he worked as a Red Cross volunteer at Huntsville Hospital for over 20 years. He also volunteered at the Senior Citizen Center preparing income tax returns, the Huntsville Police Department, and the UAB clinic in Huntsville.
Roy was a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church since 1961. He served as an active deacon, and on many committees through the years. He taught Sunday School in most all age groups, teaching the Adult Men’s class for over 50 years.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Leon and Mattie Ross Lewis, and three brothers, Leon Ross Lewis, Lloyd Mitchell Lewis, and William Daniel Lewis. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy Clark Lewis; two daughters, Vicki Lewis Stoner (Randall), and Emily Lewis Robeson (Phil); three granddaughters, Jessica Stoner Taylor (Shannon), Ivy Robeson Mills (Shane), and Amanda Stoner Williams (Marty); and five great-grandchildren, Connor Taylor, Trenton Mills, Logan Taylor, Marlee Williams, and Barrett Mills. He is also survived by his sister, Grace Wonderly.
Roy loved working in his garden and lawn. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a Tennessee Vols fan and enjoyed watching them play. Roy was an avid reader and instilled his love for books to his daughters. He was greatly loved as a son, brother, husband, Daddy, and Grandpa.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, from 1 to 2 p.m. with the service at 2 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Burial will immediately follow at Maple Hill Cemetery, Huntsville, AL.
