Doris Sherrill Hagefstration died on February 22, 2022. She was born on March 14, 1930, in Cherokee, Alabama and grew up there until moving to Pensacola, Florida in 1952. While in Pensacola she met and married her husband of 50 years, John Hagefstration in 1953. Doris and John moved to Huntsville in 1958 where she resided for the rest of her life. Doris had many life-long friends from her love of playing bridge, active in her bridge groups until well into her 80s. When she was not playing bridge, Doris loved to garden and cook. She also was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, who kept her on her toes and cooking their favorite foods—including the best strawberry shortcake, which “Dede” (as they called her) would make each spring when local strawberries were in season. Doris was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Huntsville. She was also a member of the Cosmopolitan social club. Doris is survived by her two children, Debbie Fraley (Raymond) of Fayetteville, Tennessee, and John Hagefstration of Birmingham, Alabama; her grandchildren, Gus Fraley (Lacey) and Hannah Fraley (Michael); and great-grandson, Ford Fraley. She was predeceased by her husband, John Hagefstration, her parents, Raymond and Vadie Sherrill, her brother, Raymond (“Ted”) Sherrill, and sisters, Louise Wylie and Jewel Hansbro. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 25, 2022, at Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to First United Methodist Church of Huntsville, 120 Greene Street SE, Huntsville, Alabama 35801, or Huntsville Hospital Hospice Family Care, 10000 Serenity Lane, Huntsville, Alabama 35803. Special thanks to the caregivers at Brookdale at Jones Farm and Thrive for their care of Doris since 2012, and to the caregivers at Huntsville Hospital Hospice Family Care for their care in her final days. And most especially, thanks to Primrose Hines, her favorite caregiver who also became a great friend to Doris.
