Martha Short Potter, 78, of Huntsville, passed away on Thursday, November 4, 2021, in Huntsville, Alabama. Martha was born in Huntsville, Alabama, graduated from Butler High School, and worked as a secretary at NASA during the Wernher von Braun era, and later for the Department of the Army. She retired from civil service after 37 years. Martha met her husband, James, while he was stationed at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. She was a proud military wife. During James’ 20 years of military service, the family was stationed at Redstone Arsenal, Homestead Air Force Base, Florida, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Miesau Army Depot, Germany. Martha was an avid reader of biographies and loved to travel, but her favorite times were at home with her family. Survivors include her daughter, Amy Potter Hall (Michael); son, James Brian Potter (Chad); grandchildren, Ryan Hall and Alyson Hall; brother, Bobby Short (Brenda); her beloved Shih-Tzu, Jimmie Belle; and cat, Amber. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, James Earl Potter; father, William Cal Short; mother, Mena Parvin Short; and two brothers, Richard Short and John Short. Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday, November 8th, followed by the service at 1 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Greater Huntsville Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
