FLORENCE-The Shoals Symphony Orchestra at the University of North Alabama invites you to this year’s performances as it celebrates its 39th season with the theme “From Let It Be to Under The Sea.” Shows in this year’s concert series were selected to appeal to all residents of the Shoals by featuring a wide array of music from the Beatles to The Little Mermaid.
All shows will be held in Norton Auditorium on UNA’s campus. Shows will begin in September 2021 and run until April 2022.
“Throughout the season you will have chances to explore music from a variety of genres. Not only will you experience your favorite masterworks but you might also find something new,” said Dr. Daniel Stevens, SSO Conductor.
The SSO began in 1979 as a gathering of local players wanting to perform together. It has grown and evolved into a professional regional orchestra. The SSO is the fourth largest symphony orchestra in Alabama, out of six professional orchestras recognized by the Alabama Council for the Arts.
The SSO includes both UNA faculty and students as well as regional professional musicians. “Dedicated, enthusiastic musicians are selected by competitive audition,” stated Stevens. Every student in the SSO receives a performance award to help pay tuition.
In addition to conductor, Stevens also serves as a Professor of Music at UNA and Director of the Peery Center for Orchestral Studies. “I have found that people in the Shoals really have a thirst to return to live music,” said Stevens. “We are glad to be back with a strong concert series this year that not only connects with our attendees but inspires them as well.”
Each concert series is funded by the generosity of individual and corporate sponsors, contributions by alumni and friends, grants, and ticket sales. To help the SSO continue to bring musical performances to the Shoals please consider becoming a patron. Donations can be made at this website.
“We seek to create an exciting symphonic experience for newer generations while bringing a refreshed energy to the traditions. The music will speak for itself. Please come share this experience with your family and friends!”
