Vernon Fisher Hutchens, Jr., 88, died Sunday. Mr. Hutchens attended Huntsville High School, graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN in 1950, and earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.
Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Vernon joined his father as Store Manager and later became the third generation to run The Hutchens Company. Vernon was a member of the Byrd Spring Rod and Gun Club and was a Scout Master of Troop 7. Both of his sons are Eagle Scouts. He served as a Vestry member at the Church of the Nativity, was active at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Mentone, and was a member of the Huntsville Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Martha Sue Hutchens; sons, Fisher Hutchens (Johanna) and Thomas Hutchens; grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth and John Fisher Hutchens; nephews, John William McCaleb (Anita) and Robert Hutchens McCaleb; and niece, Martha Cosentino (Stephen). He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Fisher Hutchens and Elizabeth Alston Hutchens, and sister, Elizabeth Brandon McCaleb.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Maple Hill Cemetery with Father Michael Goldsmith officiating. Masks are required.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of the Nativity, St. Joseph’s on the Mountain or Camp McDowell.
