As Term Comes to a Close, Senator Doug Jones Thanks the People of Alabama

BIRMINGHAM – U.S. Senator Doug Jones of Alabama today released the following statement on the end of his term in the U.S. Senate:

“To the people of Alabama: thank you. When I was elected to this seat, I promised to do my best to represent each of you whether or not you voted for me, and I’m proud of the work that we were able to accomplish together. From working to expand Medicaid in Alabama to supporting Alabama’s military through my seat on the Armed Services Committee, fighting for civil rights and voting rights, advocating for small businesses and working families, to making a quality education more accessible, it has been the great honor of my life to serve as your United States Senator,” Senator Jones said.

Senator Jones leaves behind a strong, bipartisan legacy in the Senate:

  • More than 25 bipartisan bills signed into law by President Trump

o   Highlights include: securing permanent funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority-Serving Institutions, repealing the military widow’s tax, shortening and simplifying the FAFSA student aid application form, improving transparency for Civil Rights-era cold case records, and requiring insurance companies to cover coronavirus vaccines and treatments;

  • 2,094 casework cases completed to help Alabamians resolve issues with federal agencies;
  • More than 40 in-person and virtual town halls;
  • 624 letters in support of Alabamians’ federal grant applications, resulting in $270,973,411 in awards for municipalities, nonprofits, colleges and universities, rural fire departments, health centers and other applicants;
  • Earned three major U.S. Chamber of Commerce awards for bipartisanship and support of free enterprise, the Military Officers Association Arthur T. Marix Congressional Leadership Award, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Award the National Rural Health Association’s Rural Health Champion Award, the National Emergency Management Association’s 2020 Congressional Leadership Award, among many others.
