John Barry Sherrod was born on June 14, 1942. He graduated from Cherokee High School and was a Letter Carrier for Tuscumbia Post Office. John was a faithful member of Tuscumbia Church of Christ. His love for Christ showed in his kindness to all those who came in contact with him. He was the epitome of one who “never met a stranger”. John was a member of the American Legion Post 31. He had a strong passion and respect for God, country, and family.
John lived life to the fullest. His lifelong dream was to build a “shack” on Hawk Pride Mountain, which he accomplished many years ago. Many memories were made there with family gatherings, fishing, bonfires, and enjoying nature. He’d welcome friends over to The Shack and cook them a great breakfast. He taught all the kids and grandkids to fish and make the best smores with just the right toastiness to the marshmallow (although some may have gotten burned). He shared an avid enjoyment for cheering on the Crimson Tide on Saturdays with his daughters, Rebecca and Tori (unless it was against Auburn), and his son Tet. Others were always welcome to join.
John’s token of love for Emily was frogs. We would be four-wheeling or hiking and, if he saw a frog, he would have to stop to get it for Emily to put in her pond at home because she loved the sounds they made. He raised all his children to love and respect God and for that they are all very blessed to have had his Christian leadership in their life. The family has been very blessed by all the wonderful memories and the love he gave to each and every one.
John never missed an opportunity to make a joke and make someone feel special. He dearly loved his brothers, George and Jerry. He and his brother Jerry were quite inseparable. Although they would argue and grumble on and on, they shared so much enjoyment with their cows, chickens, and goats, bailing hay, and so many more activities. Lots of grumbling, but deep down they loved it and each other’s company.
In the month of July, John had triple bypass surgery and colon cancer re-section surgery. He came through both surgeries beautifully. All the cancer (Stage IIA) was removed. Two months later he was advised, just for good measure, to take some chemotherapy. Due to complications from that chemotherapy, he was admitted into the hospital on October 1, 2020. God took him on Monday, December 21, 2020.
John was a wonderful son, brother, friend, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Lois Richardson Sherrod; in-laws, Walter and Pat Gatlin Monroe; and sister-in-law, Juanita Williams Sherrod.
Left with wonderful memories are his wife of over forty-five years, Emily Monroe Sherrod; children, Edgar Bryan “Trae” Miller, III (Bobbie Sue), Jennifer Bliss Miller, Rebecca Sherrod Richmond, Victoria Ann “Tori” Miller, and Edgar Bryan “Tet” Miller, IV (Emily); grandchildren, Joshua Shane Gargis, Sydney Richmond James (Dakota), Alexandra Monroe “Allie” Overby, Rachel Leigh Richmond, and Ethan Thomas Monroe Miller; great-grandchildren, Drake Lucas Casey, and soon, Cypress Blair Casey; brothers, Jerry Larkin Sherrod, and George Lynn Sherrod; in-laws, Walter Edward “Eddy” Monroe (Barbara); nephews, Blake Williams Sherrod (Cheryl), Bryan Larkin Sherrod (Kim), and Steven Edward Monroe (Amanda); niece, Rebecca Monroe Sandy (Will); and, of course, Darby, his beloved dog.
